Proclamation

The City of Canberra and the City of Nara believe that the development of friendly relations and co-operation between the two cities on a people -to-people basis and the promotion of mutual understanding and goodwill between the citizens of both cities will greatly contribute to the enhancement of friendly relations between Australia and Japan, consequently playing a significant role in the peace and prosperity of the region. Furthering the existing friendly relations the two cities hereby agree to proclaim the establishment of a sister city affiliation for the promotion of a wide range of exchange activities in such fields as business, culture, sports, education, technology, tourism and the like.

It is in confirmation of the above that the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory and the Mayor of Nara City hereby affix their signatures to this agreement in Nara on this 26th day of October 1993.

Agreement

The City of Canberra in Australia and The City Nara in Japan based on their proclamation of a sister city relationship, and wishing to establish and promote goodwill and friendly relations between both cities and countries by way of an interchange of arts and culture and an exchange of citizens, for the purpose of successful  implementation of  the sister city relationship, have agreed herewith concerning the following areas of activity :

  1. mutual exchanges of delegations from various sectors of the community;
  2. mutual receptions of visiting delegations;
  3. mutual exchange of arts, culture and  sport;
  4. mutual co-operation in industry exchange and promotion of tourism;
  5. exchange of information concerning history, culture, education and research;
  6. any other activities for the purpose of promoting goodwill and friendship between the two cities and our respective countries.

It is in confirmation of the above that the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory and the Mayor of Nara City hereby affix their signatures to this agreement in Canberra on this 31 day of March 1994
